Beware of Fake Salt Caves: A Warning from America's First Salt Cave Builder, Dr. Margaret Smiechowski

Are you considering building a salt cave or visiting one for the first time?

Don’t be fooled by imitators. The growing popularity of halotherapy (salt therapy) in the U.S. has attracted not only health-conscious customers but also unqualified builders and false claims that can lead to costly mistakes.

As the first person to introduce salt caves to the United States, Dr. Margaret Smiechowski is speaking out.

With over 20 years of experience designing and constructing functional, therapeutic salt caves, Dr. Smiechowski warns consumers and business owners to beware of fake salt cave builders and misleading marketing tactics, including people who are now impersonating her or telling her story as their own.

⚠️ Impersonators Are Misleading the Public

In recent months, Dr. Smiechowski has received numerous calls from confused clients, reporting that other builders are claiming they trained with her, partnered with her, or even originated salt therapy in the U.S. themselves.

“It’s shocking,” says Dr. Smiechowski. “People are literally telling my story as their own using my background, my innovations, even the caves I’ve built to promote their own services. It’s completely false, and it’s misleading the public.”

Some of these imposters list caves on their websites that they didn’t build, or post photos of Dr. Smiechowski’s work and claim it as theirs.

Others leave out critical components like halogenerators, salt coverage, or proper climate systems to offer a cheaper build, but leave clients with a salt room that doesn’t actually deliver halotherapy.

What Makes a Real Salt Cave?

A real salt cave is more than a “vibe.” It requires specific therapeutic engineering to qualify as true halotherapy:

  • ✅ A halogenerator to grind and disperse pharmaceutical-grade salt into the air

  • Salt-covered walls and surfaces to recreate natural salt mine conditions

  • Climate control and ventilation.

  • ✅ Expert knowledge to safely manage salt’s corrosive nature and prevent damage to HVAC or electrical systems

A fake salt cave might look relaxing with Himalayan décor and soft lighting, but it offers no real therapeutic benefit.

Dangers of Poor Construction

When unqualified builders cut corners, they may leave out essential elements of a functioning salt room, jeopardizing your health, your finances, and your business:

  • ❌ HVAC and electrical damage from salt exposure

  • ❌ Unusable or unsafe room conditions

  • ❌ Loss of credibility or customer trust

  • ❌ Zero therapeutic results

A non-functional salt room can hurt your reputation more than help your wellness offerings.

How to Spot a Fake Salt Cave or Builder

To protect yourself and your investment, follow these tips:

  1. Verify credentials – Ask for training and experience in halotherapy, not just design.

  2. Call their clients – Don’t just trust a list—contact real cave owners.

  3. Request proof of past projects – Photos can be stolen; in-person visits are best.

  4. Ask directly if they worked with Dr. Smiechowski – If they say yes, verify it.

  5. Insist on a halogenerator and climate control – These are not optional.

“If someone says they know me, worked with me, or built caves like  mine call me and ask. I’ll tell you the truth,” says Dr. Smiechowski.

Protecting the Integrity of Salt Therapy

Dr. Margaret Smiechowski pioneered the very first simulated salt cave in the U.S.

As the demand for salt therapy grows, so does the risk of false advertising and cheap imitation.

That’s why Dr. Smiechowski is committed to educating the public on what to look for, how to spot a fake, and how to build a salt cave the right way.
